2012 FESTIVAL SUBMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS AND PROCESS
NAMT's Festival of New Musicals is the cornerstone of NAMT's mission to nurture the creation, development, and production of new musicals. We present eight musicals in 45-minute staged readings with high-caliber casts and creative teams before an audience of theatre industry professionals with the experience and resources to move these shows forward. In the short run, the Festival's goal is to connect producers with writers, so that their shows can continue their development trajectory. The long-term goal is to expand the musical theatre repertoire, bringing new progressive musical theatre to thousands of audience members on stages around the world. The 24th Annual Festival of New Musicals will take place in October of 2012 in New York City. Specific dates, location and times will be announced in the spring.
The objectives of the Festival are to:
- Act as a launching pad for new musicals
- Nurture composers, lyricists and book writers
- Expand the musical theatre repertoire
- Advance the art of musical theatre
- Support and encourage new works that are diverse in ethnicity, subject matter, style and concept
- Discover new work and new voices
The Festival is funded solely through sponsorships, grants and donations contributed by government agencies, foundations, organizations and individuals. We never take any royalties from our writers nor charge the industry to attend the Festival.
Submission Deadlines: (postmarked or in person)
January 19, 2012: Non-NAMT member professional theatre organizations and theatrical agents ($60 fee)
February 2, 2012: Late Submission deadline for Non-NAMT Members, fee raises to $75/application
February 23, 2012: NAMT member theatres and Festival Alumni Writers
Step 1: BE SURE YOUR MUSICAL MEETS OUR CRITERIA
Any new musical can be submitted for consideration as long as it meets the criteria below:
The musical must...
- Be a new musical that is ready for the wide exposure that the Festival can bring it, and the writers must be ready for the hard work necessary before and after the Festival.
- Be complete (book, music and lyrics) and be ready for readings, workshops and/or productions.
- Be endorsed by one of the following (shows written by NAMT Alumni Writers can skip this criterion):
- NAMT member (click here to view a list of current NAMT members)
Any professional theatre company (a company that has been actively producing theatre for at least 2 years, has an operating budget of at least $50,000 and compensates its artists)
Theatrical literary agent
Commercial producer (any producer with a proven track record of producing musical theatre)
- Have a demo ready to submit that is an accurate representation of the music and style of the show.
- Have full underlying rights clearance of any pre-existing material used (music, source material, etc.) in the script.
- Be available for readings, workshops and/or production at the time of submission and available for performance in the fall of 2012 at the Festival.
The musical cannot...
- Already be licensed.
- Have been performed in a commercial Off Broadway production, major commercial national tour or in any Broadway theater. Shows that have had any other reading, workshop and/or production (including regional or not-for-profit Off Broadway productions) are eligible for submission.
- Have already been submitted to the Festival twice. Each show will be considered only two times.

What type of shows is NAMT looking for?
All types! We want to present 8 exciting, diverse, great works of art that inspire members of the industry and motivate them to produce them! We select shows that are of the highest standard of quality across the widest possible range of themes and styles, in various stages of development with great stories to tell. To see recent Festival selections, please check out the Festival History page.
My musical has already had a full production and is being considered for future productions at regional theatres. Does this disqualify it from submission?
No, it does not. The Festival is actually a great way to find future productions and development opportunities.
Can I submit my musical if I do not use original music?
Yes, though the Festival is intended to be a showcase for new voices, new talent and progressive musicals with exciting stories to tell. If you submit a musical that does not use original music, please be sure to provide documentation of full underlying rights clearance, or documentation that the music is in the public domain.
My musical has a commercial producer attached to the show, is that a problem?
Not at all! The Festival is a fantastic way for producers to find future producing partners across the country to help further the development of a show. But do know that shows that are accepted as part of the Festival with an attached commercial producer will still be presented on an absolutely equal footing with every other show at the Festival. The producer will be included as part of the process whenever possible but will not be permitted to supplement or enhance the presentation or process in any way. As our Festival is primarily about the writers, the commercial producers would need to accept a less "hands-on role" while the NAMT office takes the reins to ensure a quality production and equitable process.
Step 2: GATHER THE INFORMATION NEEDED TO FILL OUT THE ONLINE APPLICATION
You have to fill out the application in one sitting as it cannot be saved and returned to later. You will need information on the writers, agents, production/development history and more to fill out the application. To make this easier for you, please click here to open a PDF overview of the online application containing all of the information you will need to gather to complete the online portion of the application.
Additionally, all applications for the Festival must have a "Letter of Endorsement" from one of the following:
- NAMT member (click here to view a list of current NAMT members)
Any professional theatre company (a company that has been actively producing theatre for at least 2 years, has an operating budget of at least $50,000 and compensates its artists)
Theatrical literary agent
Commercial producer (any producer with a proven track record of producing musical theatre)
Everyone—with the exception of NAMT Festival Alumni Writers who may submit on their own—must have a Letter of Endorsement; a writer/writing team cannot submit a show on his/her/their own. The endorsing organization will have neither an obligation to support the presentation financially nor any right of ownership of or control over the presentation if selected for the Festival. But endorsing organizations should only endorse shows that they have fully read, listened to and are willing to advocate for as a show on par with the best shows they have ever seen at the Festival.
Based on type, each endorsing organization, agent or producer has a cap on the number of applications it can endorse each year. Those caps along with required application fees are listed below:
- NAMT member: 3 musicals, no application fee required
Other professional theatres or commercial producers: 1 musical, $75 application fee required
Theatrical literary agent: 2 musicals per agent (not agency), $75 application fee required per submission
- NAMT Alumni Writer: 2 musicals per writer, no application fee required
The fee can be paid upon completion of the online application by credit card or a check can be mailed when you submit the demo and supporting materials (outlined in Step 3). Anyone can pay the fee; it does not need to come from the endorsing organization.

My friend is a Festival Alumni Writer and encouraged me to apply; can he/she write my Letter of Endorsement?
Unfortunately, Festival alumni are only allowed to submit their own scripts for consideration and cannot act as an endorsing organization for other submissions.
I can’t find a theatre or producer to endorse my musical. What should I do?
Give Festival Producing Director Branden Huldeen a call (212-714-6668 x14) and he will help you come up with some more ideas of people to endorse your show. We cannot guarantee you anything but we will try to help you discover other eligible organizations in your area.
Step 3: FILL OUT THE ONLINE APPLICATION
The application needs to be filled out in one sitting, make sure you have everything ready, as listed in Step 2.
The link to the online application is at the bottom of this page. You must read the entire page thoroughly before filling out the application.
You will be asked to upload a PDF of your script when you fill out the online application. All script submissions must adhere to the following: (click here for a sample script that follows the desired format)
- The script must include a title page, a brief synopsis (1/2 page or less), a character breakdown, track listings for the CD included and unattributed author's note (if applicable)
- All pages must be numbered.
- The CD track numbers must also be embedded in the script alongside the moments in the libretto when the track is to be played (see page 4 of the sample script).
- The script must be in PDF format and will be uploaded during the application process.
- The script should contain no writer information, no agent information, no production history, no previous cast information and no award information anywhere in the script. It should be purely the script as outlined above with no additional information.
- Mailed scripts will not be accepted.
Step 4: TO COMPLETE YOUR SUBMISSION, MAIL IN THE FOLLOWING:
After you successfully complete the online application, please submit the following by mail or in person by the deadline. Single packages are preferred, but the Letter of Endorsement may arrive under separate cover if necessary.
- A copy of the email confirmation you will receive after the online application is completed (sent to the primary contact as designated on the online application)
- A Letter of Endorsement from the endorsing organization that you listed in the online application. (Not required of Festival Alumni Writers)
A $60 Festival administrative fee per musical submitted $75 if submitted between January 20 and February 2, if the endorsing organization is a literary agency or a non-NAMT member theatre or producer. You can pay by credit card at the end of the application or mail in a check after the application is submitted, along with your supplemental materials.
A short organizational summary (1/2 page) of the endorsing organization, if not a NAMT member.
- A signed letter from the authors and underlying rights representative stating that underlying rights have been secured in the case where the musical is based on copyrighted material. The letter must state that the rights are secured through full production and not just for the submission process or for the Festival. If the musical is wholly original, please submit a signed letter from the creators stating as such. Writers working with properties in the public domain should submit a letter stating when the work was copyrighted and that it is now in the public domain.
- 4 copies of a good-quality CD with the sequence of the recording matching the sequence of the script. The recording should be a significant representation of the songs in the show that accurately highlights the scope and depth of the score and lyrics. At least 50% of the songs in musical (not including reprises and recitatives) is recommended. Please only submit single CDs, not double discs.
- 4 copies of the CD should be sent in and only the name of the show should appear on the CD and on the jacket or liner. No writer or performer information should be included anywhere on the CD.
- CD track numbers must be included in the script, corresponding to each song on your CD. If possible, please include a list of tracks with the CD on the jacket or in the case.
- Do NOT e-mail CD tracks.
Do NOT submit: DVDs, press clippings, marketing or other promotional materials
To receive confirmation of receipt of materials, please include a self-addressed, stamped postcard.
Due to the large volume of submitted material, NAMT is unable to return any materials.
Submission Deadlines: (postmarked or in person)
January 19, 2012: Non-NAMT member professional theatre organizations and theatrical agents
February 2, 2012: Late Submission deadline for Non-NAMT Members (fee raises to $75/application)

My musical is based on another property and the original author or underlying rights holder will only give me clearance to submit the show to the Festival, but not through to full production. Can I still submit my show?
In general, shows need to have full clearance from the underlying rights holder through to full production. However, each case is different and we understand that some underlying rights holders are more protective than others. Before submitting, call Festival Producing Director Branden Huldeen at 212-714-6668 x14 to discuss the specifics of your case.
Does the recording I submit have to be a professional demo?
The demo should be a good quality recording with the sequence of the recording matching the sequence of the script. The recording should be a significant representation of the songs of the show. A standard submission includes a high-quality demo with a clear piano and clear vocals. It is not necessary to submit a recording of the full orchestrations. We also recommend that the singers on the recording match the vocal types/genders of the show’s characters.
My show had some really great reviews and press from recent productions that I want the selection committee to know about. Why can’t I include that in my packet?
We keep the selection process purely about the script and the CD. This blind process helps us select the best shows possible each year without influence from other sources.
I have a full double-disc recording of the show, should I send them both in?
Unfortunately, we can only accept single-CD recordings of the show. We would recommend you select 1 full CD’s worth of tracks that best reflect your work
Can I submit my score, orchestrations or lead sheets for consideration?
We can only accept audio CDs. Other supporting material will not be accepted.
I live in the NYC area, can I drop off my demos, bios, etc.?
Absolutely! The NAMT offices are located at 520 8th Avenue between W. 36th and W. 37th Streets in Suite #301. We accept deliveries from Monday-Friday, 10:30am-5:30pm. Please note that the deadlines for submission remain the same whether they are dropped off in person or mailed.
Step 5: THE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE SELECTS THE FESTIVAL PRESENTATIONS
Note: Only the "Application Primary Contact" that you list on the application will be notified of the results via e-mail no later than mid-July.
To evaluate the submissions each year, NAMT assembles a committee of NAMT members from across the country. The committee uses a blind evaluation process. Committee members are given no additional information beyond the title of the show, the script and the demo. Our process is based on the art of the submitted piece rather than who wrote it, the history of the piece or the awards it has won. The information you provide in the application is to help process your submission and gather statistics and is seen by the NAMT office only, not the selection committee.
In Round 1 of the selection process, every demo is listened to by three members of the Festival Committee alongside the first 20 pages of the submitted script. The committee votes on whether the material will advance to Round 2. Those shows selected to move on to Round 2 will not be notified.
Round 2 selections are each read by three members of the Festival Committee. The committee meets to select the 20 shows that will be included in the final round. Shows selected to move on to Round 3 will be notified in mid-May.
In the final round, every committee member reviews all 20 scripts and CDs. The committee then meets to select the 8 Festival shows which are notified in mid-June and announced in early July.
Due to the volume of submitted material, the National Alliance for Musical Theatre will be unable to provide feedback regarding why a particular piece was or was not selected for the Festival.
Click to view Frequently Asked Questions about Step 5
If my musical is not chosen, will my materials be returned?
Due to the high volume of submissions received, NAMT will not be able to return any materials submitted to the Festival for consideration.
Step 6: IF YOU ARE SELECTED
The 8 shows selected each year to be presented at the NAMT Festival are given the full support of the NAMT office to ensure a quality presentation and experience for everyone involved. The NAMT office oversees the entire Festival and individual shows and also assigns consultants from the NAMT membership to help each writing team through the process. We pride ourselves on taking as much burden off of the writers as possible so they can focus on being writers. The office hires staff specifically for the Festival to help cast, book spaces, handle general rehearsal logistics and manage all technical aspects.
We expect writers to be hands-on throughout the entire process, from casting through sound check. Being part of the NAMT Festival as a writer is a time-consuming, intensive process and writers who participate need to be able to commit fully and enthusiastically.
Each writer will be given a $500 honorarium in appreciation of their talent and time and to cover any related personal expenses. You will neither pay further fees to NAMT, nor does NAMT take any percentage of future royalties. We are committed to having our Festival musicals unencumbered financially.
NAMT proudly pays for the entirety of the Festival process, from marketing to registration and from first rehearsal to final bows. NAMT pays for all of the actors, musicians, cast rehearsal spaces, directors, music directors, performance venue, technical needs, programs and more.
After the Festival, you will be a NAMT Festival Alumni Writer, joining a group of over 450 past Festival writers and eligible for invitations to future Alumni events like roundtables and conferences. You will also continue to receive the assistance from the NAMT office whenever possible to help further develop your musical and your career.
Click to view Frequently Asked Questions about Step 6
What does NAMT financially expect once my musical appears in the Festival?
Nothing. NAMT takes no future royalties, and does not encumber the piece in any way. We do require acknowledgement in future productions and/or publications. Also, you may not sign any contractual agreements on your show between the time it is selected until 30 days after the Festival, unless a prior contract has been signed.
Why are the staged readings 45 minutes?
The Festival is a marketplace for new musicals and the audience is made up of theatre professionals looking for new talent and new shows to produce. To attract the most theatre professionals to the Festival, we have found that presenting eight 45-minute showcases over two days garners the highest attendance levels.
What costs are covered?
NAMT covers the following costs for each presentation: performance venue, all technical equipment, writer honorarium, actor fees, director fee, musical director fee, band fees, stage manager fee, rehearsal space/supplies, script copying, and the program insert for the Festival presentation. NAMT is not able to pay for travel or housing for any artists involved in the presentation.
What are the limitations put on the presentation beyond the 45-minute time limit?
We will only permit each cast to have no more than 12 people in it (this includes stage directions). The band arrangment will be different this year than it has been in the past. We are currently planning on only permitting 2 band members per show, essentially a piano +1 pit. We have reduced the bands down this year because we want to bring the focus back to the lyrics and the show and not on the band. Do not worry if you have a larger set-up for your show as we will work with each show to find the best sound compromise that serves the show but also serves the needs of our audience. Shows that move on to the final round of the selection process will have a chance to request one additional instrument and the decision for any 3rd instruments will be decided by the selection committee.
Should my musical be selected, am I required to provide the cast?
The NAMT staff works closely with each show to find the best creative team and cast possible. We guide each individual through the process in a very hands-on approach with the aim to give each writing team a stellar experience and to highlight the musical in the best way possible at our Festival.
I normally star in, direct or music direct my shows. Is this possible at the NAMT Festival?
To ensure full focus on the writing, for the NAMT Festival, we do not permit our writers to do anything beyond being writers for the presentations. We will find someone outstanding to take your role or duties on the production. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact Branden at the NAMT office.
.
If you have any further questions about the Festival or of the submission process, please contact Festival Producing Director Branden Huldeen at branden@namt.org or 212-714-6668 x14.
